The Loss of a Chicago Peace Officer

On February 13, Chicago Police Commander, Paul Bauer, responded to a call on a fleeing suspect and was shot six times in the head, neck, torso, back, and wrist. Tuesday around 1:30 p.m. officers patrolling  Lower Wacker Drive spotted the suspect, Shomari Legghette and approached him, which ended in him running away. The officers began to chase him and gave his description on the radio. Bauer was in a police vehicle at Lake and Clark and saw the suspect fleeing after moments of the description was given. Bauer chased after Legghette at the top of the Thompson Center stairwell and struggled to detain him. As they both struggled, Legghette took out his gun and fired 7 times, killing Bauer. In a matter of seconds Officers found Bauer laying in a pool of blood and the suspect laying in the stairs, in his pocket they found a 9 mm hand gun with an extended clip. Officers also recovered a "sharp object" as well as controlled substances such as heroin, marijuana, and cocaine. he was also wearing a bullet proof vest.
Legghette`s extensive criminal background consist of convictions in two drug cases, a gun offense, a misdemeanor battery and a robbery in the late 1990`s in which he and a co-defendant robbed two people at gun point before leading police on a high- speed expressway chase. During the chase legghette threw the robbery proceeds and a gun out the car window. he was arrested after a roadblock forced them to exit the expressway, abandon the car and try to flee on foot (Phara.17).
Paul Bauer will be deeply missed. He is a married father of a 13 year old daughter. He was also the highest ranking Chicago officer killed while on duty. He started his leadership in 2016 the Near North District. Bauer always talked frustrated recidivism and about of clearing repeat offenders from the street.
