Documentary Questions

  1. Was there a specific scene that got to you? Describe and explain how it moved you (Angry? Curious? Delighted? Motivated?). Give a lot of detail, and really dive in to explain how it affected you. Don’t hold back.

One Scene that got to me was when peter and his crew were explaining how the FBI came to black hills to take sue away. When they were describing everything detail you can see the sadness that these paleontologists experienced while the government was packing Sue up to take her away. This scene made me feel sad for them because it was such a big discovery and they put all their work into getting Sue in their museum just to be stripped away from them.

       2. What surprised you?

I was surprised that peter was sentence for 6 months and then it was changed to 2 years in prison and 2 years’ probation.  One guy said that it was the paleontologists with PHD`s that convinced the judge that it had to be done because it would protect the sciences and the fossils. They wanted to convict them to show that no one can just go and dig up fossils without permission.

3.What questions remain after the viewing? What feelings stayed with you after the film? Did they “pop up” in your life in unexpected ways? When? How? What was that like?

I am still confused on what is it that they did wrong for Peter to be convicted and sentenced to prison. I don’t understand how was sue taken away from Peters museum when they paid for her and then he was able to sell her in an axon. One feeling that stood with me was that I felt bad for South Dakota because they weren’t able to get Sue back where she belongs, but it was good that she was put in Chicago’s Field Museum where people can still see her instead of by a private buyer.

4.What problematic concepts do you see in the film, concepts you might research and write about?

One thing I would look up is what are the requirements in order do go fossil hunting with. I feel like the documentary could be a little bias because they feel like they did nothing wrong, so I would look into the illegal aspect of what it is that they did wrong.
